Bittorrent banned from Antarctica, and boy, are the penguins pissed

We all had a good little chuckle when Firefox took Antarctica by storm, capturing 100% of the web browser market share. Today the news is not so rosy for bittorrent and peer-to-peer supporters.

The U.S. Antarctic Program has banned their use. From the official communique from the USAP's director of IT and communications:

There are many different Peer-to-Peer (P2P) applications: BitTorrent, LimeWire, Gnutella, and KaZaa to name a few more popular ones. Some are used to download legitimate software and media, some illegitimate. None of them are permitted on the USAP enterprise network for both bandwidth and security concerns. P2P applications have the potential to overwhelm the internet connections on the Ice and inadvertently bring malicious software and traffic into the network.

An unhappy USAP employee wrote FreakBits 'The gist I got from it was 'because you are all too dumb to use a computer correctly.' At least the plans for my secret uranium mine won't leak out while I'm down here freezing my ass off.'

We went poking around the icy continent to see what other Antarcticans thought about the policy.

One penguin speaking on the condition of anonymity told us, 'Hey, there are plenty of legitimate uses for bittorrent. It's going to take forever for our Linux group to download new distros now.' He added, 'We're not all trying to download episodes of The Real Housewives of Orange County like Professor Opposable Thumbs over there.'

And he's right. He stinks like greasy fish, but he's right. Bittorrent and peer-to-peer apps aren't the problem. It's inappropriate use and carelessness that's the problem.

The penguins plan on staging a protest later this month, though they refused to announce any details at this point. 'We don't want to jeopardize the operation,' said our source.

I got a very nice explantion of the current crisis which i read in another forum that I thought that I should share with you:

Phajja is the proprietor of a Siri-Paya and Nehari Shop in Lahore. Sales are low and, in order to increase them, he comes up with a plan to allow his customers to eat now and pay later. He keeps track of the meals consumed on a ledger.
Word gets around and as a result increasing numbers of customers flock to P hajja’s shop. Phajja’s suppliers are delighted and are very willing to sell more and more raw materials for the meals he prepares. Phajja shows them his ledger of receivables and they extend him credit.
A young and dynamic customer service consultant at the local bank recognizes these customer debts as valuable future assets and gives Phajja a credit line and then increases Phajja’s borrowing limit.
Taking advantage of his customers’ freedom from immediate payment constraints, Phajja jacks up the prices of his Nehari and Siri-Paye.
Customers dont mind as they are not required to pay on the spot. Sales volume increases massively; Banks and suppliers lend more; Phajja opens more outlets. He sees no reason for undue concern since he has the debts of the customers as collateral.
At the bank’s corporate headquarters, expert bankers recognize Phajja’s customer loans as assets and transform these customer assets into BONDS.
These negotiable instruments are given exotic names such as SIRIBOND, PAYABOND, MAGHAZBOND AND BONGBOND. These securities are then listed on the Stock Exchange and traded on markets worldwide. No one really understands what the names mean and how the securities are guaranteed but, nevertheless, as their prices continuously climb, the securities become top-selling items.

One day, although the prices are still climbing, a credit risk manager of the bank decides that the time has come to demand payment of one of the debts incurred by Phajja. Phajja in turn asks his clients to pay up.
One by one they refuse; the clients cannot pay back the debts. Phajja refuses to serve them any more. The clients stop coming.
Phajja is really screwed now. He cannot fulfill his loan obligations and therefore claims bankruptcy. All Bonds drop in price by between 80 to 95%.
The suppliers of Phajja, having granted generous payment due dates and having invested in the securities are faced with similar problems. The meat supplier defaults on payment to the sheep and cattle supplier and claims bankruptcy. The atta supplier is taken over by a competitor; Pajja lays off the cook and staff. Bankruptcies soar, unemployment mushrooms.
The bank that lent the money in the first place is set to collapse. It is saved by the Government following dramatic round-the-clock consultations by leaders from the governing political parties with Phajja commuting back and forth in his Executive jet and Mercedes 500SEL, brokering the deal.
The funds required to save the economic collapse are obtained by a tax levied on the citizens, most of whom do not eat Nehari or Siri-paye.

Now substitute Phajja with USA or GM/FORD or any US Bank…….

Ah, Life!

First of all, hello to everyone who reads this blog (er.. no one does actually!). It's been a long time.

What a day it was today. Twelve hours in front of the computer screen at work, developing in Java. Work's good actually, but the night timings are killing me. All the world seems upside down to me these days. I'm sleeping when the others are working and vice versa. Rarely do I get to talk to friends and family during the week, and its just the work-home(sleep+eat)-work cycle, the whole week through.

When I reached home from the office today, I could feel my vision to be blurred. It was nearly half past noon and the rest of Saturday (or whatever's left of it) would be spent sleeping, so basically it's a one day weekend for me this time.

I dunno how long is this gonna continue, but I sure do hope that I get along this (supposed to be temporary) period soon and get back to 'normal' life.

8. Tiger Woods
On a sunny day in Southern California in the middle of June, Tiger Woods completed one of the most remarkable victories in major championship golf. Defying doctors’ orders and jabbing knee pain, the world number one gritted his way through a 19-hole playoff with fellow American Rocco Mediate to win the US Open at Torrey Pines.

Tiger Woods has won a lot of majors, and there are likely many more to come, but we marveled over his U.S. Open win, during which he sank a birdie at the 18th hole on Sunday to force an 18-hole playoff the following day -- all while overcoming a partially torn knee ligament. And by doing that he lands 8th on my top 8 sport stories of 2008.

7. Boston Celtics
The Boston Celtics demonstrate that an ailing dynasty instantly can be reborn, if only there's a team out there that's dumb enough to send them Kevin Garnett. The Celts finished the regular season 66-and-16 behind the strong performances by their "Big Three" of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce.

They faced the West Champs LA Lakers in the final which restarted one of the biggest rivalries in sports history. The first time the storied rivals met for the championship since 1987.

The Celts needed six games to bounce the Lakers and league MVP Kobe Bryant. It was Boston's first league title in 22 years.

6. Lewis Hamilton
Equally spectacular was Lewis Hamilton’s ability to capture the Formula One world title in only his second season of racing.

There was a mark of fortune about his victory because he needed German driver Timo Glock to make way for him in the final bend to get into the points bracket, denying Ferrari’s Felippe Massa right at the death.

It was a perfect atonement for the Interlagos debacle 12 months earlier that had seen Kimi Raikkonen snatch the world title from his grasp.

Remarkably, Hamilton did it without sufficient support from McLaren team mate Heikki Kovalainen but all the same underlined that the British-based company had made the right decision to let go of double champion Fernando Alonso.

5. South Africa
Cant express this better than Peter Reubeck:

"South Africa has secured the most significant success in its cricketing history. It was a triumph that reached beyond sport. When Hashim Amla flicked another ball off his pads and scampered the winning run, he achieved more than a mere victory. It was a stroke that spoke for generations of Indian cricketers unable to compete for places in the national team. Suddenly they knew their records meant something, that they had been right, the champions of previous generations could play the game. When JP Duminy constructed his accomplished innings, he was representing a coloured community that languished for so many years in a twilight world. When Makhaya Ntini took wickets, he was uplifting downtrodden tribes. If hearts swelled with pride across the country it'd hardly be surprising. Others rejoiced in the peaceful revolution that made it possible. "

What an amazing performance! They have put Australia in a position they have not been for 122 years ! A series whitwash at home ! Simply awesome !

4. Spain
A big-game flop no more, Spain won the European Championship 1-0 over Germany on Sunday for its first major title in 44 years.

Fernando Torres scored in the 33rd minute and the Spaniards never backed down against such a formidable opponent. Their last significant title came in the 1964 Euros at home.

In beating a team that makes a habit of appearing in championship finals, the Spaniards put to rest a reputation for underachieving. Always loaded with talented players, Spain has spent four decades falling short of expectations.

That all changed at these Euros, where the Spaniards swept their first-round games, eliminated World Cup champion Italy in a penalty-kicks shootout in the quarterfinals, then routed Russia 3-0 in the semifinals.

Against the highly accomplished Germans, they weren't intimidated. They got the one goal they needed -- from a slumping striker, no less -- and set off chants of "ES-PANA," and "Ole, Ole Ole" at the final whistle.

3. Rafael Nadal
Rafael Nadal’s epic five-set win over Roger Federer is easily the BEST tennis game I have ever watched. WHAT A FINAL !! Remember the two strokes Fed played facing Championship Losing Points !! WORLD CLASS !! But Nadal was the deserved winner at the end. It confirmed the Spaniard as the rising star of world tennis and woke Federer out of his slumber.

If truth may be told, the ice-cool Swiss star had got it easy until that final and it is curious to see how he will react in the new calendar year.

He is just one Grand Slam short of Pete Sampras’ all-time record of 14 titles and I would personally like to see him raise his workrate because he seems to be playing at 75 percent of his ability.

Nadal himself could improve but I have the sneaking suspicion that his power-game has it’s limits.

In 2008, Nadal became the second man to win four consecutive French Open titles and also won the Olympics Men Single Gold.

2. Manchester United

What a fantastic year 2008 has been for United.

There have been so many great moments - winning the 10th Premier League title, the fantastic tribute to the lads who died in Munich, Cristiano Ronaldo’s unbelievable contribution, Ryan Giggs’ achievements in breaking Sir Bobby Charlton’s appearance record and scoring both the goal that sealed the title and what proved to be the decisive penalty in the Champions League final and capping it all of by becoming World Champions.

Moscow is definitely the biggest highlight for me. I’m a big admirer of John Terry, but no-one was more delighted than me to see him slip at the vital moment in the shoot-out. Thanks Terry ;)

1. Michael Phelps
At the Beijing Olympics that began on 8/8/08, Michael Phelps maintains numerical continuity while winning 8 gold medals. He broke seven world records at Beijing Olympics. Read that again, SEVEN WORLD RECORDS !! How can you top that !! What an achievement !! What a swimmer ! Sportsman of the Year !

The BEST-EVER-YEAR in SPORTS :D

Here's wishing each subsequent year is better than the last one :D

Opera 10 Alpha Release

Opera released the Alpha Release of their upcoming version of their browser ! For all those who dont know.. Alpha release is the release where they show the world the engine behind the hood.. After this the Beta release would be released which will add more features.. and after all the beta testing has been done, well you know.. :)

So, rather than ramble on, here's a quick list of what's new:

Full Score i.e. 100/100 and pixel-perfect on the Acid3 test (the first browser ever to do so)
Presto 2.2 Engine (New regular expression engine, which greatly improves performance)
Auto-update of the browser (Opera will now update itself as new versions are released)
Inline spelling checker
Opera Mail improvements, including rich text composition and delete after X days
Widget Improvements on Linux

Anywayz, this looks awesome but I am a die hard Firefox fan ! Should I give this a try? Lemme know !

Well well well.. first of all i would like to wish my pal here a very happy birthday ! may God bless you, on every birthday of yours, more than He has blessed you in the year before !

Secondly, i would like to express my gratitude on being chosen the first guest blogger on this blog ! and that too coincidentally, on this special day ! Thanks bro..

Lets talk about Birthdays.. should we be celebrating it or doing the opposite since it marks another end of an year to our really short life ! Why do we celebrate birthdays? Why do we wish others a Happy Birthday? Questions I have asked myself.. Answers I am not so sure of.. My way of life: celebrate whatever you can, but always be thankful to the One Above for all that you have, however less it may seem to you ! So, in my opinion we SHOULD celebrate birthdays.. make it an excuse to celebrate some quality time with your family and/or friends (preferably both).. a reason to call someone up who you haven't talked to in a while.. or just do something you would never do on an ordinary day.. life is too short to let these excuses and reasons pass on.. the moral of the story.. LIVE !! Live your life, dont just exist ! You owe it to the ones you love and yourself ! Cheers !

So, this was basically an inauguration of my blogging skills.. first blog entry ever ! Save this up, this could be (as Barney would say) LEGENDARY ;)

Birthday!

Well well well. Happy Birthday to me!
It's the fourth of December today and I'm thinking about writing something creative but sadly, the ideas aren't flowing in. I normally don't celebrate my birthday and this time, it has been no different. I've received a few wishes from friends and family and I guess that's all I need to regard this day as special to me. The only difference this year though, has been that that I haven't received a birthday wish from someone who's always wished me since the day we met. And I also know that they're not gonna wish me ever again.
Well here's the interesting part: me and my pal have decided to create a common blog spot for our circle of friends. Everyone's gonna be able to write about their every day life, share pictures and videos in a single place. One would normally ask, "Why wouldn't you guys do it on Facebook?" Well, we could have done that but I guess Facebook isn't the best place for blogging (that's just me). So we're gonna have a common blog for all our friends, where we would, you know, do stuff as mentioned above.
So guys, that's it for today and I'm really looking forward to the common friends' blog. We still haven't named it yet, but as soon as we do, I'll post it here immediately.
